Goal

Installing Windows 2003 Server with RAID enabled on a Sun Fire[TM] X2100 or X2100 M2

Solution

This document provides the steps to install Windows 2003 Server with RAID enabled on a Sun Fire[TM] X2100 or X2100 M2.

Although the process is applicable to other X86 systems, each Tools and Drivers or Supplement CD/DVD media will be unique depending on the system. This process is for the Windows English Standard Edition Retail CD.

Perform the following steps as the root user:

1.) Download the Sun Fire [TM] X2100 / X2100 M2 Software Tools and Drivers disk:

Sun Fire X2100 SW 1.8.0 from https://updates.oracle.com/Orion/Services/download/p10275731_180_Generic.zip?aru=13123841&patch_file=p10275731_180_Generic.zip

Sun Fire X2100 M2 SW 1.8.0 from https://updates.oracle.com/Orion/Services/download/p10363259_180_Generic.zip?aru=13203941&patch_file=p10363259_180_Generic.zip

2.) Create a temporary directory to host the download:

mkdir /files

3.) Copy the zip archive to the /files directory:

cp p10*_180_Generic.zip /files

4.) Unzip the archive to reveal a CD/DVD disk image:

cd /files ; unzip p10*_180_Generic.zip

5.) Mount the CD/DVD disk image:

Solaris:

lofiadm -a /files/p10*_180_Generic.iso ; mount -F hsfs /dev/lofi/2 /mnt

Linux:

mount -o loop p10*_180_Generic.iso /mnt

6.) Copy the 2003Reburn_1.0.zip file to the /files directory:

cd /mnt ; cp 2003Reburn_1.0.zip /files

7.) Unzip and execute the reburn script whilst you have your Retail Windows 2003 Server CD inserted. Reburn will not work and is not supported with OEM media:

cd /files ; unzip 2003Reburn_1.0.zip ; /files/2003Reburn -b

8.) Follow the instructions according to the script. This procedure will be different depending on whether or not your system has a CD/DVD burner or not.

Once the reburn CD has been created, boot the system using the reburn CD since the BIOS will need to be modified to enable RAID.

1.) After POST, press <F2> on the black BIOS screen to enter the setup utility.
2.) Change Operating System to other via Installed O/S -> Others
3.) Select Integrated Peripherals to modify the RAID settings
4.) Enable RAID for SATA Prim1, SATA Prim2, and SATA Sec1
5.) Press <F10> to save the configuration

Reboot the system with the reburn CD and install Windows 2003 Server following the setup process. Once Windows 2003 Server is installed, the RAID configuration will need to be setup.

1.) After POST, press <F10> on the black BIOS screen to enter the RAID configuration utility.
2.) Select the two disks and add them to the array.
3.) Save the configuration and exit.
