Goal

The serial port located on the System Controller for the 12K/15K/E20K/E25K servers can be connected to any other serial device, if the correct pin-out is used.
Below, are the pins and signals for the serial port.

Solution

Use the following diagram when creating a connection:
8 pins Mini DIN
------------------
Signal, pin number -----------
------------------ / \
DTR 1 / 8 7 6 \
CTS 2 | |
TXD 3 | 3 4 5 |
GND 4 | |
RXD 5 \ 1 2 /
RTS 6 \ /
DCD 7 -----------
NC 8

In case you need to hook up a laptop, that only has USB ports and no serial port, the Keyspan "High Speed" USB Serial Adapter USA-19HS has proven to work fine, both on Windows and on Solaris[TM].
At the time this doc is created, detailed info on the adapter was available at http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/USA19HS.
