Description
Sun StorEdge[TM] 99x0 series: Explain Striping Group size for RAID 5 (7D+1P), RAID 1 (4D+4D) and RAID 6 (6D+2P) with HDD model 146GB or larger

With the introduction of 146GB HDD and larger, for Sun StorEdge[TM] 9970, 9980,9985 and 9990, HDS/Hitachi has implemented Striping Groups to overcome limitations in representing very large Parity Groups in cache.

The maximum capacity of the striping groups must be considered, if using OPEN-V
or LUSE/CVS.

Steps to Follow
A Striping Group is a virtual Parity Group within the real Parity Group.

During configuration, if the platform has any of the following configurations,
a "Striping Group Configuration window" will be displayed:

  • HDD models of 146GB capacity or larger
   Plus any of the following:
  • RAID 5 (7D+1P)
  • RAID 6 (6D+2P)
  • RAID 1 (4D+4D)

In any other conditions, the Striping Group is equal to the Parity Group, so a
"Striping Group Configuration window" will NOT be displayed.

Sun StorEdge[TM] 9970 and Sun StorEdge[TM] 9980

Please consult following sections of the Maintenance Manual:

  • INST01-290 Drive Expansion Sequence RAID5 (7D+1P)
  • INST05-180 Striping Group Configuration window
  • OPEN03-280 OPEN-V Setting
  • OPEN03-290 LUSE definition

If selecting OPEN-V or LUSE/CVS, consider the size, based on the above
references. The Striping Groups have different capacities, and combined,
they reflect the capacity of the Parity Group.

For example:

  • RAID5 (7D+1P) Striping Group (1) = 0.75TB (decimal) = 737256 MB
  • RAID5 (7D+1P) Striping Group (2) = 0.27TB (decimal) = 222440 MB
  • RAID5 (7D+1P) Parity Group = 1.02TB (decimal) = 959696 MB

  • INST01-530 Drive Expansion Sequence RAID5 (7D+1P/6D+2P)
  • INST01-590 Drive Expansion Sequence RAID5 (7D+1P/6D+2P)
  • INST05-200 Striping Group Configuration window
  • OPEN03-320 OPEN-V Setting
