Description
This document is an overview on how to increase/decrease the number of available Host Channel Port IDs (PIDs/SIDs) on the Sun StorEdge[TM] 3000 family arrays (non-JBOD). A reset of the array is needed to implement the changes.

Functionality:

The Host Channel port(s) MUST have assigned 'Channel IDs' (PIDs/SIDs) before a Logical drive (LD) can be mapped to that channel. The total number of available 'Channel IDs' for all Host Channel ports is dependent on the 'Luns per Host SCSI ID' configuration setting. This setting, by default, is given a value of '32' and is located in the H/W RAID controller's firmware menu:

View & edit Configuration parameters
Host-side SCSI Parameters
LUNs per Host SCSI ID - 32

If the 'Luns per Host SCSI ID' variable is set to '32'; then the total number of 'Channel IDs' available for ALL Host Channel ports is 4 on a 33x0 SCSI, 3510 FC, and 3511 SATA array.

For example, a 33x0 SCSI array has Channel 1 and Channel 3 designated for
host/server connections. Channel 1 has ID0, ID1, ID2, and ID4 assigned to the
'Primary' controller. A user then attempts to assign ID5 to Channel 3 on the
'Primary' controller and gets the following error:

'No Available Host-Channel-Scsi-Id Combinations!'

NOTE: The error still displays if the user attempts to assign an ID to the host
channel on the secondary controller.

The example above was attempted by the user via the firmware menu:
view and edit Scsi channels.

(user selects 'Host Channel 3')
View & edit scsi Id (sub-menu displays the following)
ID 0 (Primary Controller)
Add Channel SCSI ID/Delete Channel SCSI ID
(user selects 'Add Channel SCSI ID')
Primary Controller/Secondary Controller
(user selects 'Primary Controller')
User selects 'ID #' from list provided
'Add Primary Controller SCSI ID'?
(User selects 'Yes')
'No Available Host-Channel-Scsi-Id Combinations!'

Obviously, the total number of 'Channel IDs' were consumed/used on Channel 1
(ID0, ID1, ID2, and ID4). This can be verified by the following via the array
controller's firmware menu:

View & edit configuration parameters
Host-side SCSI Parameters
view & edit Host luns
(The following is displayed):
ch1 ID0 (primary)
ch1 ID1 (primary)
ch1 ID2 (primary)
ch1 ID4 (primary)

The user, now has 2 options:

1)Unassign one of the IDs given to Channel 1, and then reassign the ID to Channel 3
2)Increase the number of available 'Channel IDs' on the array

Formula:

Understand that the maximum number of Host Luns for a Sun StorEdge[TM] 33x0 SCSI array (non-JBOD) is '128'.

Therefore, if the 'Luns per Host SCSI ID' variable is set to '32; then the total number of 'Channel IDs' available for ALL Host Channel ports is 4...

128/32=4
128 Luns/Partitions maximum on a 33x0 SCSI Array
32 partitions per Channel ID
4 Channel IDs maximum can be selected/assigned to a host channel

Options that can be selected from the 'Luns per Host SCSI ID' configuration
setting are:

8
16
32

In turn equates to:
128/1=128 maximum Channel IDs available for Host Channel Ports
128/2=62 maximum Channel IDs available for Host Channel Ports
128/4=32 maximum Channel IDs available for Host Channel Ports
128/8=16 maximum Channel IDs available for Host Channel Ports
128/16=8 maximum Channel IDs available for Host Channel Ports
128/32=4 maximum Channel IDs available for Host Channel Ports

Note that when changing the 'Luns per Host SCSI ID' configuration setting, a
reset of the array is needed to enable the additional Channel IDs for assignment.

To change the number of available 'Channel IDs' via the array's firmware menu:

view & edit Configuration parameters
Host-side SCSI Parameters
luns per Host SCSI ID-32 (hit the return/carriage key to get the following
options):
1
2
4
8
16
32

After selecting one of the above options, the array will prompt the user to
reset the array so that these changes can be implemented.

Additional note in regards to the 3510 FC and 3511 SATA arrays:
The default setting on the 3510 FC and 3511 SATA arrays for the 'luns per Host SCSI ID' is the same as the 33x0 SCSI array (32):

view & edit Configuration parameters
Host-side SCSI Parameters
luns per Host SCSI ID-32

Knowing that the maximum LUN assignment is 1024 LUNS per 3510 FC or 3511 SATA array...

In turn equates to:
1024/32=32 maximum Channel IDs available for Host Channel Ports
1024/16=64 maximum Channel IDs available for Host Channel Ports
1024/08=128 maximum Channel IDs available for Host Channel Ports
...and so on
