Description
SL8500 - "R" Media Identifier Label Quality Issue (T9840 Data Tapes)

Solution

Steps to Follow
R Media Identifier Label Quality Issue (T9840 Data Tapes)
Problem Description:
Misaligned cut on the media ID label causes an audit failure (cut is too low on the label). Library Engineering has not yet established what all of the potential error code/s associated with this problem are going to be. Today, we know that when the audit takes place the system may see the label as an "R" the first time then as a "D" which does not match the first audit and this initiates the failure/s to mount the tape into any 9840 drive.

Special Note: This has been found only to be a problem with the SL8500 vision system, other Library models do not scan/read the label the same way and do not have this exposure.

Customer Exposure:

Imation's investigation indicates the approximate exposure is 1200 labels which would include both StorageTek and Imation Branding. The Burlington Air Express (BAX) account discovered 261 cartridges and Imation's Tech Service reports that they are working with a customer in Chicago with a similar issue involving a 350 cartridge order. This implies that we have identified the potential location of 589 of the 1200 suspect "R" labels.

Manufacturing Corrective Action:

Imation has inspected 100% of all 9840 media in their cartridge production areas as well as labels in stock.

Customer Corrective Action:

Whenever the symptoms described above has identified one or more suspected cartridges, follow normal media replacement procedures as appropriate with the specific media vendor whether it is Imation or StorageTek.
