How do I replace a Hard Disk Drive from a X6250 Server Module?

This document explains how to physically replace and install a hard disk drive in a Sun Blade[TM] X6250 Server Module.  It does not explain how to diagnose a faulty disk.

Note: Always refer to the X6250 Server Module Service Manual #820-1185-XX at http://docs.sun.com/ for the latest updated procedures and ESD protection standards.

Note: Hard Disk Drives can be Hot-Swappable devices if RAID is configured.

Replacement Steps

    1. Locate the HDD.

       A. Determine which disk has its service action required indicator on.

          1. Left LED on (green): The drive is operating properly.

          2. Middle LED on (amber): The drive is faulty and should be replaced.

       B. Also use the error log's HDD logical name and trace it down to the physical device for verification that you have the correct failed drive location.

Note: Once the HDD is isolated from its operating environment, it can be hot-swapped without removing the server module it is on.

    2. Remove the HDD.

       A. Press the button on the face of the HDD to release the spring-loaded securing latch.

       B. Grasp the securing latch and pull to disengage the disk from its connector and the drive bay.

       C. Slide the disk half way out of its slot to allow you to support it with your other hand while you slide the unit out.

Note: When you replace the HDDs, you must return each HDD to the same bay from which it was removed.  Use an adhesive note or another method to temporarily label the HDDs when you remove them.

Caution: Possible data loss: If you insert an HDD that has been configured with a RAID volume into a server that did not previously have it's HDDs configured with RAID volumes, the existing HDDs in the server will be converted to RAID volumes during automatic synchronization, and any existing data on the existing HDDs in the server will be erased.  Before permanently removing an HDD that is part of an active RAID volume, use the Configuration Utility to delete the RAID volume from the HDD to avoid causing this problem.

    3. Install the replacement HDD.

       A. When you install an HDD, open its securing latch before you push the drive into the bay.

       B. Push the HDD into the vacant drive bay until it stops.

       C. Then close the securing latch to fully engage the connector on the HDD backplane.

Note: If the HDDs were previously configured as a mirrored RAID 1 array, an automatic resynchronization is invoked and the contents are automatically rebuilt from the rest of the array with no need to reconfigure the RAID parameters.  If the bad HDD was configured as a hotspare, the new HDD is automatically configured as a new hotspare.
