Description

This document addresses handling and recovering from "System hangs" on x64 Systems running Solaris.

To discuss this information further with Oracle experts and industry peers, we encourage you to review, join or start a discussion in the My Oracle Support Community - Sun x86 Systems

Symptoms

  • system hang
  • system is not pingable
  • can not login
  • can not execute commands
  • can not mount shares
  • can not start/stop services
  • system not responding
  • system is not usable

Conditions that can cause hangs

  • Deadlock (A deadlock is a situation wherein two or more competing actions are waiting for the other to finish, and thus neither ever does.)
  • Resource exhaustion
  • Hardware failures

Solution

Steps to Follow

Handling "System hangs" on an x64 Solaris™ Installation

The purpose of this document is to firstly check what you think is a hang actually is a hang. And if it is, how to proceed...

Verify that your system is actually hanging

A hanging system will not respond on any command. It's no longer usable. Refer to DocID: 1012991.1 "How to check if your x64 platform "system hang" actually is a system hang".

How to reset your server in the event of a hang

If you have qualified that the system is in a "hung situation" you have to reboot the system with a force option or by switching off the power. The shutdown will not be graceful. Refer to DocID: 1008398.1 "How to reset a X64 Platform" for more information.

Collecting data for further analysis of the hang

A core dump is needed for further analyze of the hang situation. Refer to DocID:: 1003085.1 "Solaris Operating System: Forcing a kernel core dump on an x86 or x64 system".You should setup the system with kadb and open service request for next time the issue occurs.

Oracle service need at least a valid core dump and explorer of the system to analyze the "hung situation". Refer to DocID: 1018748.1 "How to Run Sun Explorer and Forward the Data to a Sun Engineer" to run an explorer of the system.

At this point, if you have validated that each troubleshooting step above is true for your environment, and the issue still exists, further troubleshooting is required. For additional support contact Oracle Support.
