Description
This document gives details on how to check for power on a Sun Fire[TM] v20z/40z system, both locally (i.e. If you have physical access to the platform), and remotely using SP commands.

How to verify power on a Sun Fire[TM] v20z/40z System

Verifying system power if you are local to the server

Ensure that an AC power cords is plugged into at least one power connector on the rear of the server and into an AC power outlet(s).

NOTE: The v20z has one AC input and the v40z has two AC inputs.You can run a v40z with one AC input, but you will need two for power redundancy.

If you have a V20z, turn on the AC Power switch on the server back panel. The AC Power indicator LED will light if the system has power.

There is no separate AC Power switch on the Sun Fire V40z server; AC power is applied when you plug in a power cord to a power supply.

The AC power indicator LED on each power supply will go on as soon as power is applied.

You should now hear the fans start turning

NOTE: If you have no LEDs on the PSUs, engage a qualified electrician to check the AC voltage on the power cords.

At this point the service processor is powered up but not the server itself.Power up the server by pressing the button on the front panel. This will also boot up the server

Refer to the attachments for the rear views of the servers.

Verifying system power remotely

Log in to the SP using the SSH command. NOTE: You will need the IP address of the SP to do this:

# ssh -l <sp_admin_account> <IP_ADDRESS>

Check the output of the SP command:

platform get power state

If ON then the system is verified as powered on
If OFF, it means the platform is powered off.

Use the SP command:

platform set power state on

to power the platform on and boot the Operating System.
