Description
This document shows how to gather disk info like "disk model", and/or "disk
vendor", for a failed disk that is marked as <drive not available: formatting>
in the format program.

Steps to Follow
Solaris[TM] Operating System: Two ways to gather disk info for a failed disk.

Description

  • Environment: A Sun StorEdge[TM] A5200 Array, with disk f,9 faulted:
  • Extract from luxadm command display:
                                    SENA
DISK STATUS
SLOT FRONT DISKS (Node WWN) REAR DISKS (Node WWN)
0 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXX967 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXX994
1 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXXdd8 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXX7e0
2 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXX1a9 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXX507
3 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXX59e On (O.K.) 200000203XXXXee5
4 On (O.K.) 20000011cXXXX84a On (O.K.) 200000203XXXXe83
5 On (O.K.) 20000004cXXXXaa1 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXXba5
6 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXX324 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXXff0
7 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXXff1 On (O.K.) 20000004cXXXX9b1
8 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXX167 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXX62b
9 On (Faulted) On (O.K.) 200000203XXXX820
10 On (O.K.) 200000203XXXX02b On (O.K.) 200000203XXXX379
  • The front of the array shows a faulted disk in slot 9.
  • From the format command:
    31. c3t9d0 <drive not available: formatting>
    /sbus@6,0/SUNW,socal@d,10000/sf@1,0/ssd@w210000203XXXX8f3,0
  • format-inquiry does not work.
  • Explorer diskinfo does not work.
  • prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/c#t#d#s2 does not work.
  • Disk is not mirrored, and does not belong to any VXVM/SVM volume.
  • Disk sizes are mixed on the box.

Two Possible Paths of Action

1) With iostat -En

  In this case:
c3t9d0 Soft Errors: 0 Hard Errors: 12 Transport Errors: 19
Vendor: SEAGATE Product: ST39103FCSUN9.0G Revision: 114B Serial No: 0032XXXX32
Size: 9.06GB <9055065600 bytes>

2) Using other inquiry comand at Operating System level.

   From the /var/adm/messages file:
    Dec 29 08:42:20 dr-ressys scsi: [ID 107833 kern.warning] WARNING:
/sbus@6,0/SUNW,socal@d,10000/sf@1,0/ssd@w210000203XXXX8f3,0 (ssd65):
Dec 29 08:42:20 dr-ressys transport rejected (-2)
ssd driver instance # is 65.
Looking in the /etc/path_to_inst file will verify that the ssd instance
# 65 is assigned to the disk with WWN 210000203XXXX8f3:

"/sbus@6,0/SUNW,socal@d,10000/sf@1,0/ssd@w210000203XXXX8f3,0" 65 "ssd"

Looking for instance #65 from prtconf -v comand output:
           ssd, instance #65

It can be confirmed, that thedisk model is ST39103FC, size is 9.0 GB, etc..

NOTE: This information will not be available if the host has been rebooted since
the disk failed.
