Goal

A Sun Fire[TM] V1280 or E2900 can be upgraded to PCI+ capabilities by replacing its existing PCI I/O Controller for a PCI+ equivalent.

This document shows the device paths associated with each PCI+ slot and where these differ from the older PCI  I/O Controller. It also offers guidance on the PCI-to-PCI+ upgrade requirements to overcome the differences in the device paths.

If you require information on PCI-X I/O device paths, see Document 1003932.1 instead.

Solution

Solaris[TM] requirements for PCI+

For proper operation, you must re-install the Solaris[TM] Operating System once the PCI+ IB_SSC (IO Controller) is installed.
  • For the Solaris[TM] 9 OS, re-install using Solaris[TM] 9 9/05 (U8) or a later version.
  • For Solaris[TM] 10, use Solaris[TM] 10 3/05 HW1 or a later version.

Notes:
  • Only slots 2 and 3 have the same device path addresses as the earlier PCI I/O controller.
  • See Document 1005907.1 for PCI I/O controller device path information (choose "v1280 & E2900 pci" from the list of systems contained in that document).

Additional PCI+ IB_SSC Information:

The PCI+ I/O Controller has six 66MHz PCI+ slots that accept Sun or third party HBAs. These slots are attached to three of the four XMITS buses (two slots per bus). The buses in question are buses A and B on XMITS1, and Bus A on XMITS0. A fourth bus, bus B on XMITS0, is used for internal PCI+ devices and also runs at 66MHz (although this 66MHz bus contains some 33MHz devices isolated behind a bridge chip. Such 33MHz devices include the SBBC and an IDE device. Isolating these slower devices behind a bridge chip prevents them from slowing down devices on the wider 66MHz bus).
  • All previously qualified 3.3V PCI adapters are supported in the new PCI+ IB_SSC.
  • Legacy 5V signaling PCI adapters are NOT supported in the new PCI+ IB_SSC.
Notes:
  • The Sun Fire[TM] V1280 or E2900 IO Controller accepts short PCI or PCI+ cards only (174.63 mm) rather than the standard PCI length of 312mm. Therefore, some HBAs (PCI adapters) are not supported because they won't physically fit into the IO Controller's short slots.
  • The IDE controller used on the PCI+ IO Controller has changed from that used on the earlier PCI I/O Controller and is not supported until S9U8 or S10HW1 (with f/w 5.19.3). When upgrading from a PCI version of the IO Controller to a PCI+ version, you must reinstall the Solaris Operating system to get support for the new IDE controller (and the new device paths), as stated in the product notes.
See the E2900 & V1280 PCI+ Product Notes (pdf) for additional information.

Internal Comments
  • For an understanding of the structure of a device path, see Document 102100.1
  • E2900/V1280 systems that have the PCI+ IB_SSC IO Assembly will not be able to install or boot from Solaris 9 9/05 DVD or CD
  • The PCI+ IB_SSC IO Assembly is not properly supported by any release of Solaris 8 (See Document 102133.1).
