Goal

Description
After connecting to a Sun Fire[TM] v1280/E2900 or n1280/n1290 System
Controller, how do I get to the lom prompt?

Solution

Steps to Follow
Getting from the Solaris[TM] prompt to the "lom>" prompt.

After connecting to the System Controller (SC) via telnet, you arrive directly into the domain's OS prompt (will see the Solaris prompt). You may have a need to navigate to the lom prompt (For example, to execute various SC commands such as showlogs, showboards, etc).

In order to escape to the lom prompt, you need to type

#.

NOTES:

  1.   Above is two characters, "#" followed by "."
  2.   Make sure to type the characters of the escape sequence within approx. 1.5 seconds of each other.  If there is a longer pause between characters the system will assume that the escape sequence is not being invoked and will not drop to the "lom>" prompt.

The above command will break out of the OS shell and drop you into the Lights Out Management (LOM) prompt (Note that on some keyboards the "#" character is the combination of SHIFT and "3".). The same break sequence is also used when you have connected to the system controller via the serial SSC connection.

Escape Sequence is Customizable
While "#." is the default setting for the escape sequence, it is customizable by the user and the value can be displayed and/or changed either from Solaris or when at the "lom>" prompt.

Viewing settings via Solaris:

If the machine is currently up and running Solaris the current value for the escape sequence may be displayed in Solaris by executing the 'lom -c' command. This will display the current config for the SSC on the system.

To change the escape sequence use the command 'lom -X string|char' as detailed in the LOM man page.

Please note:
In 2003 there was a bug which could cause the 'lom -c' command to display the wrong or incomplete escape sequence when it had been previously customized at the "lom>" prompt. Please validate that Patch 110208-18 or higher is installed to make sure your system is showing accurate information for this setting.

Viewing settings via lom:

To see the current setting when at the lom> prompt execute the 'showescape' command.

To change the value use the 'setescape' command followed by the desired characters in double quotes (ie. setescape "#.").

  • For more details type 'setescape -h' at the "lom>" prompt on the SC.
  • This escape sequence can be used even if the Solaris[TM] OS is not currently running (ie. system is at the ok prompt).

After finishing your administrative tasks at the "lom>" prompt you can set the SSC back to console mode by executing the command 'console' at the "lom>" prompt. This returns you back to the Solaris domain's OS prompt (as you entered the system).
