Description
The version of Linux on the LX50 is highly compatable with Red Hat Linux
version 7.2. Is it possible to install Sun Linux on a generic PC?

Steps to Follow
The Sun Linux 5.0 distribution that comes with the LX50 has been tuned to
take advantage of LX50 specific hardware configurations. To quote some of
our "Differences" document against Red Hat Linux 7.2;
I. Sun Linux 5.0 Installer:
---------------------------
The installer for Sun Linux 5.0 is designed specifically for easy
installation on the Sun LX50 server with minimum user input, and as such
does not support general purpose installation on a wide array of x86 based
hardware. If you add a new hard disk, replace a failed system disk, or for
any other reason need to restore the system using the CD-ROMs for a
standard default restore, the installer will perform the task with almost
no input from the user.
You can choose to perform your own disk partioning, or if using the LX50
server with 2 or more disks, you may setup a RAID configuration.
General Sun Linux 5.0 installer details:
- Uses a kickstart file, with a specification determined by a
launch script which examines the LX50 platform and proposes a suitable
configuration.
- Increased log information during installation is sent to the serial port.
This information details every individual package as it installs, and
several of the post-install steps that are performed.
- Halt on successful install, instead of auto-reboot.
- Provides a single-button os-restore using the default disks and
configuration.
- Does not support locales other than EN (English) at this time.
- Provides for automatically ejecting cd-roms, and sensing when the next
one is inserted.
Sun Linux 5.0 LILO boot loader details:
- Adds additional lilo entries for serial console and display, for each
kernel option listed at boot time.
- Default to using lba32 with lilo, so that disk layout of kernel is more
flexible.
- Forces enterprise kernel to be installed. (Normally only installed if
certain BIOS attributes are found.)
- Sun Linux 5.0 installer does not make a LILO entry for 'DOS'. (This
protects against the installer noticing the /diag partition during install
and making a lilo boot entry for it.)
So while it may boot on non-LX-50 hardware, don't expect all to work
properly. It is no longer a general purpose install aimed at any old PC.
