Solution Type Technical Instruction Sure Solution 1005717.1 : Do Sun ethernet NICs and switch products have VLAN support?
PreviouslyPublishedAs 207918 Description Do Sun[TM] ethernet Network Interface Cards (NICs) and switch products have VLAN support?
Steps to Follow All Sun NICs can operate on VLAN configured switches in a "single port based" VLAN configuration (as any other end hosts on ethernet). Tagging is not needed if the port only belongs to a one port based VLAN. VLAN tagging or multiple VLANs per NIC requires network Hardware and Drivers that implement IEEE 802.1q . The "standard" method to support VLANs is 802.1Q VLAN-Tagging (802.1q is the IEEE standard for VLANs). Sun's older GbE NIC (vge version 1.1) and SunSwitch[TM] (version 1.1) supports 802.1q VLAN-Tagging (64 VLANS maximum, # 0-4094) Sun's newer Gigaswift NIC (ce version 1.0) supports 802.1q VLAN-Tagging (512 VLANS maximum, # 1-4094) and is compatible with switch vendors who support 802.1q. Solaris [TM] 8,9 or higher VLAN driver packages : * SUNWvld - VLAN utility routines (32-bit) Solaris [TM] 10 VLAN driver packages : * SUNWvld - VLAN utility routines (64-bit) Sun Products that support 802.1q VLAN-Tagging : (Note: This is not an exclusive list. It is possiblle that this list may not include some of the latest drivers) 1. Network Interface Cards utilising the vge driver: * X1045A Gigabit v1.1 SBus running vge-driver rev=2.0.24+ 2. Network Interface Cards utilising the ce driver, e.g: * X1150A 501-5902 GigaSwift Ethernet 1.0 PCI (GBE PCI copper UTP) 3. Sun Systems utilising the ce driver for the on-board interface(s) 4. Sun Systems utilising the bge driver for the on-board interface(s) (See <Document: 1010687.1> for details) 5. X1046A SunSwitch v1.1 running firmware rev=2.0.22+ 6. ISL is Cisco's inter-switch-link protocol (Cisco proprietary) Quad FastEthernet ( qfe ) - no 802.1q Trunking 1.x ( qfe and ge - no 802.1q GigabitEthernet v2.0 ( ge ) - no 802.1q (GEM replaces Gigabit v1.x). Note: Gigabit 1.x (vge) and SunSwitch is EOL.
