Goal

SVA Host Recabling versus Defining Devices. If after a S390 host is IPL'd the ESCON channels are reconfigured on the SVA (moved from one port to another) then devices that are defined after the cabling changes will not come online.

Solution

If after a S390 host is IPL'd the ESCON channels are reconfigured on the SVA (moved from one port to another) then devices that are defined after the cabling changes will not come online. Getting the newly defined devices online requires configuring the attached CHPIDs offline and then back online. This problem exists at the host level and can be demonstrated on all SVA products.

CAUSE:

The host establishes the System Adapter IDentification Number (SAID) for the ESCON channels at IPL time. During the IPL the SAID values are established for all possible devices for any CHPID. Configuring CHPIDS offline and back online will only reset the SAID values for those devices that exist at the time of the CHPID configure online command. Devices defined after the CHPID configure online command will not have valid SAID values in the host if the ESCON cables have been moved and will not come online for this reason.

SOLUTION:

Do not reconfigure SVA attached ESCON channels unless it is done concurrent with a host IPL. Alternately, be prepared for the need to configure the CHPIDS offline and back online.
