This document describe how to check if the system is responding to the Console via and if you are local to the server.
Symptoms:

Console not rersponding

Steps to Follow
This document uses the optional service processor SMDC (Service Management Daughter Card) to get a remote console with the help of IPMI (Intelligent Platform Management Interface). Therefore this Card needs to be installed and configured to follow the steps within this document.

When the platform OS is up and running, the system console is either graphics on the Locally attached monitor or text based on the serial console redirection in the SMDC Service Processor. Please note BIOS menu or system boot message before platform OS up will appear on all these console.

This document describes how to connect to the system. Please choose which method is already configured on your system and most convenient for you. When accessing a system console, please type any key and check if the console is responding to see if the console is working or not.

Please note that there might be a process blocking the console, so press CTRL+C to break this process to see if there still response from the console.

If there is no console response to the key presses then the system may be hung. Refer to one of the following documents to troubleshoot further:

1. Getting a physical Console via locally attached Graphics Monitor

If the system has physically a monitor attached to the video connector on the back on the system and at least an USB keyboard.
Even if attaching a monitor and keyboard/mouse to the system may be inconvenient it is the most reliable way to check the console response.

2. Getting a console via SMDC Service Processor

You can connect to a serial console redirection on SMDC. You need to have the SMDC Service Processor configured (like. IP address, user added) and to have the console Redirection set in BIOS to "Enabled over SMDC". You also need to have a serial console supported by your Operating System and need to be Configured and enabled before.

To connect to the Serial Console over Lan you need to use the IPMI tools

  • Connect to the serial console by running the following ipmitool comand. NOTE: You will need the IP address of the Service Processor to do this:
      # ipmitool -A password -H <SMDC_IP_ADDRESS> -I lan -U Admin -P <PASSWORD> tsol <LOCAL_IP_ADDRESS>
[Starting SOL with receiving address <LOCAL_IP_ADDRESS>:6230]
      [SOL Session operational.  Use ~? for help]
