When updating the /etc/system kernel parameter for the network
interface that connects to the E10K control board, make sure
the speed setting is 10Mb, not 100Mb. The reason for the lower setting is
that the E10K control board only supports 10Mb speed. Many customers set
the speed at 100Mb with full duplex mode for all QFE and HME cards on the
system. This causes a communication issue between E10K control boards
and QFE/HME 10/100Mb cards.
You can force the public network interface by using the ndd command in
/etc/rc2.d/S69inet. The default network interfaces connecting to the
control boards are QFE1 and HME0.
To set up QFE card, you can issue the following ndd commands in the
/etc/rc2.d/S69inet for 10Mb, full duplex, no auto-negotiation mode
with specific instance # like 1:
ndd -set /dev/qfe instance 1
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_autoneg_cap 0
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_100T4_cap 0
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_100hdx_cap 0
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_10fdx_cap 1
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_10hdx_cap 0
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_100fdx_cap 0
To set up QFE card, you can issue the following ndd commands in the
/etc/rc2.d/S69inet for 100Mb, full duplex, no auto-negotiation mode
with specific instance # like 0:
ndd -set /dev/qfe instance 0
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_autoneg_cap 0
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_100T4_cap 0
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_100hdx_cap 0
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_10fdx_cap 0
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_10hdx_cap 0
ndd -set /dev/qfe adv_100fdx_cap 1
For HME interface setup, you can replace the qfe strings with hme strings.
If you turn on the auto-negotiation mode for the 10/100Mb network
interface, the speed and full/half duplex mode may not be detected
correctly due to incompatibility between different hub/switch vendors and
Sun. If either the speed or duplex mode is not set up correctly,
the customer experiences a slow network performance. This performance
reflects on the different system and customer application.
