Description
When installing a Sun Fire V1280/Netra 1280 into a rack using the Sun Fire V1280/Netra 1280 Systems Installation Guide for information, you may discover a difference between the chassis holes used for securing the inner slides detailed in the guide and those found on the system.


Steps to Follow
The instructions in Chapter 1.1.3 "Installing the Inner Slides" of the Systems Install Guide point 3 and Figure 1.3 on Page 1-5 of the Sun Fire V1280/Netra 1280 Systems Installation Guide (Sun Doc ID 817-334-10, dated Dec 2003) clearly refers to using 2x 8-32 screws to secure the inner rails. However the early versions of the 1280 chassis do not have these screw holes in place and the documention makes no reference to this situation.
The early chassis (without 2x 8-32 holes) can be installed safely into a rack so long as the inner rails are secured correctly using the spring clips attached to the inner slides.

To make the systems conform to NEBS complience (earthquake and vibration resilient) an engineering update was made to the chassis which included the addition of the 2x 8-32 holes for securing the inner slides. Please note that the inner slides still require the spring clips to be secured correctly to the later chassis.

Both styles of chassis can be installed into racks safely however the documention does not detail the earlier chassis type that maybe found by the engineer during installation.
