Goal

Description
Information on the Self Test Using SL Console.

The SL8500 Self Test Diagnostic Routines were introduced at FRS_1.10 (3.20).

The SL8500 Full SelfTest diagnostic routine is available with all current microcode releases.

Solution

Purpose:

The SLC SelfTest diagnostic is intended to be run as a minimal functional test at initial install and at periodic intervals after the initial installation; to diagnose basic problems with library operation (e.g. robots, elevator, drives, CAP). The test is currently accessed through the "Utility" menu of the StreamLine Library Console (SLC). Two options are available, Partial and Full. The partial option tests are non-disruptive to customer operations. The "full" option is a complete suite of tests that are disruptive and is primarily intended as a "checkout" after the initial installation.

The SelfTest Diagnostic Routines test the communication paths between the main library controller (HBC) and all drives, Sbots, elevators and caps. After checking the communication paths, several motion tests are performed ? including Sbot, elevator and CAP motion tests. Finally, a full audit of the SL8500 is performed, followed by drive mounts and dismounts.

Success or failure of the tests is recorded in a scrollable window on the StreamLine Library Console (SLC) and in the SL8500 event log.

Requirements:

-8 diagnostic tapes with external volsers with a prefix of DG (i.e. DG0001L2).

-2 diagnostic tapes per rail, one on each end of the rail.

-The diagnostic tapes must be placed in the Playground area. The Playground area is the last two columns in the CIM on both sides of the library.

-The Full Self Test requires the Library to be in an Offline Operation State in SLC. This is accomplished through the SLC system detail screen.

Note: To date there is no asynchronous notification sent from the library controller to the library manager, i.e. HSC and ACSLS, indicating the library was taken offline. If the customer is in production, first vary the library offline to the library manager before varying the library offline via SLC.

Test Run Times:

Partial SelfTest takes approximately 5 minutes.

Full SelfTest is configuration dependent but will take approximately 22 minutes in a standard SL8500 (no CEM) with 6 available drives.

SLC SelfTest Help Information:

Performing the Library Self Test
Use the self-test utility to verify proper operation of the library after a new installation, service activity, or to just validate the operational state of the library and the associated devices (drives, CAPs, elevators, and robots.

There are two types of library self test:

* Partial
* Full

Partial Self Test
The partial self test is non-disruptive and does not require the library to be taken offline. The routine does not affect the library operations currently active. The test verifies the network connectivity of the library and the associated devices (drives, CAPs, elevators, and robots)

Full Self Test
The full self test performs a partial self test and also audits the library.

Warning: The library has to be takes offline to perform a full self-test. So, make sure to end all the library operations that are currently active before performing a full self test.

To Perform a Library Self Test:

1. Select Tools > Utilities.
2. Select the Self Test tab from the options bar.
3. To perform a partial self test, do the following:
a. In the Mode field, select Partial from the pull-down menu.
b. Select the Start tab from the top right corner of the screen.

4. To perform a full self test, do the following:
a. Select Tools > System Details.
b. Select the Library folder from the device tree.
c. Select Status > General.
d. In the Op State field select Offline from the pull-down menu and then select Apply.
e. Select Tools > Utilities.
f. Select the Self Test tab.
g. In the Mode field, select Full from the pull-down menu.
h. Select Start.

After completing the self test the system displays a summary report of the diagnostic tests performed.

5. If you performed a full self test, you must change the operational state of the library to Online. Follow steps 3a through 3c. In step 3d select Online from the pull-down menu and then select Apply.
