Goal

This document is to address the question on what values to set for the Physical Slots and Available Slots parameter for Solstice Backup[TM]/Sun StorEdge[TM] Enterprise Backup jukebox when a Sun StorEdge[TM] L100 Tape Library with six drives is in use.

Solution

Steps to Follow
This is the steps to follow when addressing the question on what values to set for the Physical Slots and Available Slots parameter.

1. When L100 is configured with 6 drives (in Bay 1 Level 2 of library), then one of the 8 magazines will have to be sacrificed. This is because the Level 3 Left magazine and fixed slot will prevent the robotic hand from accessing the tape drive in drive Bay 1 on Level 2 of the library. Effectively, the L100 loses the use of 12 slots from 49-60.

2. In configuring the jukebox in the EBS, there are two parameters that are relevant to the slots constraint of the L100 (when configured with 6 drives). These would be the Physical Slots and the Available Slots prarmeter. The Physical Slots parameter must remain as 1,100 as this defined the number of physical slots in the L100. The Available Slots parameter define the range(s) of slots available for holding data cartridges. This is necessary because there may be slots that are configured for other purposes such as holding Cleaning Tapes, use as Mailslots, marking a damaged slot, etc. Hence, in the case of a L100 with 6 drives configured, the Available Slots parameter can be set as "1-48, 61-100". However, as the L100 when configured with 6 drives will be aware that it cannot access those slots in Level 3 Left Magazine, then there is no chance of it ever trying to place a tape into any of those slots. Networker in its interface to the L100 via the lus driver will also not be able to instruct the L100 to place any tape into those slots of Level 3 Left magazine. Therefore, whether the Available Slots parameter is set at "1-100" or "1-48", 61-100", it really will not affect the operation at all.

3. In conclusion, it is possible to configure the Available Slots parameter as "1-100" or "1-48, 61-100". Both are correct.
