Goal

This document describes the three replacement methods and provides information on which FRUs can be replaced using which method(s).  This document should be used to decide which method is best to utilize given the system configuration and the FRU which requires service.

To discuss this information further with Oracle experts and industry peers, we encourage you to review, join or start a discussion in the My Oracle Support Community - M Series Servers

Solution

Description
Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) can be replaced on Sun SPARC Enterprise[TM] Mx000 systems using one of three possible replacement methods:
  • Cold Replacement

  • Hot Replacement

  • Active Replacement

This document is Step 5 of  Document 1002526.1 Sun SPARC Enterprise Mx000: Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) Service Action Plan Reference.

Regarding Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Replacement Methods
If the HDD is the boot device, it will have to be replaced using cold replacement procedures. However, active replacement can be used if the boot disk can be isolated from the Oracle Solaris OS by disk mirroring software and other software.

Steps to Follow
Cold Replacement Method requires all domains and the entire platform be shut down and powered off in order to replace the FRU. Every FRU in Mx000 platforms can be Cold Replaced, but some must be replaced using this method.

Cold Replacement Method

The components which must be Cold Replaced on M3000 are:

MBU_A MBU_A_2 DIMM PCIe HDDBP
PSU DVDU FAN_A FANBP_B OPNL

The components which must be Cold Replaced on M4000/M5000 are:

MBU_A MBU_B CMU_A MEMB DIMM
DDC_A DDC_B XSCFU IOU DDCR
FANBP_A FANBP_B FANBP_C BPU_A BPU_B
HDDBP TAPEBP DVD DVDBP_A DVDBP_B
OPNL

The components which must be Cold Replaced on M8000/M9000 are:

XBU_B CLKU_B OPNL SNSU ACS_A
ACS_B ACS_C ACS_D ACSTPH_A ACSTPH_B
ACSTPH-C ACSTPH-D BP_A BP_B PSUBP_A
PSUBP_B FANBP_A FANBP_B FANBP_C MEDBP
SWBP RDPF

The following steps are simply a reference to make one aware of what is involved in the Cold Replacement Method process, but the Service Manual is the authoritative resource for the actual process to be followed.

  • Shut down all applications (if running) on all domains on platform.

  • Shut down all domains.

  • Power off the platform.

  • Unplug the power cords (Make sure to be at the same potential as the system).

  • Initiate FRU replacement.

  • Power on the platform and verify FRU replacement is successful.

  • Bring domains and applications back online.

Hot Replacement Method

Hot Replacement Method requires that the domain(s) containing the faulty FRU be shut down in order to replace it.  The remainder of the platform can stay in operation during the service period. Fans and PSUs are not part of domains and can therefore be replaced while all domains are running. Special rules apply for these FRUs to guarantee redundancy during the replacement operation, they are described later in this document.

The components which can be Hot Replaced on M3000 are:

FAN_A HDD PSU

The components which can be Hot Replaced on M4000/M5000 are:

FAN_A FAN_B PSU

The components which can be Hot Replaced on M8000/M9000 are:

CMU CPUM_A CPUM_B DIMM IOU
HDD PCICS IOUA PCIB-EX XSCFU_B
XSCFU_C PSU FAN_A FAN_B DDC_A
DVDU TAPEU

The following steps are simply a reference to make one aware of what is involved in the Hot Replacement Method process, but the Service Manual is the authoritative resource for the actual process to be followed.

  • Shut down applications (if running) on domains that contain the FRU.

  • Shut down domains that contain the FRU.

  • Initiate FRU replacement.

  • Verify FRU replacement is successful.

  • Bring affected domains and applications back online.

Active Replacement Method

Active Replacement Method can only be used on redundantly configured FRUs that can be Dynamically Reconfigured (DR) into or out of a domain.  No interruption to domain or platform operations will occur when utilizing this method. Fans and PSUs are not part of domains and can therefore be replaced while all domains are running

NOTE:  Active Replacement was not available until XCP 1050.

The components which can be Active Replaced on M3000 are:

HDD PSU FAN_A

The components which can be Active Replaced on M4000/M5000 are:

PCICS HDD TAPE

The components which can be Active Replaced on M8000/M9000 are:

CMU CPUM_A CPUM_B DIMM IOU
HDD PCICS IOUA PCIB-EX XSCFU_B
XSCFU_C DVDU TAPEU PSU FAN_A
FAN_B DDC_A

The following steps are simply a reference to make one aware of what is involved in the Active Replacement Method process, but the Service Manual is the authoritative resource for the actual process to be followed.

  • Verify the FRU is redundantly configured in all domains in which this FRU is configured.

  • Verify the FRU and all dependent hardware on the FRU (I/O adapters, etc) are inactive.

  • Verify that resources are switched to alternate paths (I/O, network, etc) if necessary.  This may include breaking disk mirrors or utilizing multi-pathing software to perform the actions.

  • Initiate FRU replacement utilizing Dynamic Reconfiguration.

  • Verify FRU replacement is successful.

  • Verify that any inactivated paths are re-enabled for all affected domains.  This may include syncing disk mirrors or utilizing multi-pathing software to perform the actions.

  • Verify that the affected domains and applications are all still online without issues.
