Description
A Sun StorEdge[TM] 3510 array using anything but the default channels (2 & 3) for Redundant Controller COMmunication (RCCom) may require system downtime in the event a controller replacement is necessary.

Steps to Follow
Users of Sun StorEdge[TM] 3510/3511 arrays with dual controllers have the option of moving the inter-controller communications function to unused channels to improve performance. System defaults are to use channels 2 and 3 as drive + RCCOM channels.

If a controller replacement becomes necessary, the replacement unit will likely come configured to attempt RCCOM communications on the default channels. If the existing controller is communicating on different channels, the two controllers will not crossload firmware or synchronize their actions, and both controllers will assume PRIMARY role. The array then becomes very difficult to manage, since both controllers are communicating via ethernet and they both write data to the serial port.

Suggested workaround: (requires downtime) Via serial port, telnet or sccli, change the channel settings so RCCOM is on channels 2 and 3. This requires controller reset. Then insert replacement controller.

Alternate workaround: (requires no downtime) Insert new controller into another unused array, connect via serial port, and change RCCOM channels to match the existing settings in the array needing the replacement. The controller can now be introduced into the array normally (HOT).
