Goal

Sun StorEdge[TM] L25 and L100 Tape Libraries, have an internal error log,called an event history. This can be collected and used, in conjunction with the /var/adm/messages file, and application logs, to understand problems.

Solution

Steps to Follow
To collect the event history, the unit's address in a web browser, will bring up the following menu:
(There is a network port on the Prism management card).

Prism Home PMC Server Management ALERT E-mail ALERT Library Management Fibre Channel Management (Fibre channel units only) Help

Click on the icon by ALERT Library Management and you get this menu.

Prism Home PMC Server Management ALERT E-mail ALERT Library Management Library Status Library Configuration Library Statistics Service Operations Monitoring Configuration Event History Help

Select the icon for Event History.
Customer will be asked for his username and password.
(If it has not been set up, it will be admin admin).

The logs are then displayed.
Note the time stamp at the top and compare it with the host system time.
Here is a sample of 3 events:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Title = INFO_SCSI_IN_MENU
Description = Operator panel is in menu mode - Fault System Code: 4019
Originator = Frame 1
Time Stamp = Fri Jun 10 16:01:47 2005

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Title = INFO_LIBRARIAN_MAG_7_INSERTED
Description = Magazine 7 has been inserted - Fault System Code: 4419
Originator = Frame 1
Time Stamp = Thu Jun 9 08:47:39 2005

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Title = INFO_SCSI_MECHANICAL_ERROR
Description = SCSI command failed due to servo problem - Fault System Code: 400C
Originator = Frame 1
Time Stamp = Sun Jun 12 23:55:41 2005

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first two events here are informational.
The third one is an error message.

To save the log as a file, select all of the text, paste it into a text document and save it.

Notes:
1. Some of the events are informational. (Usually most of them).
2. Fault System Codes can be found in the User Guide.
3. There is usually a time difference between the library and the host.
4. The events here are the library's view - not the drive's view.
5. These logs do wrap around and eventually get overwritten.
