Description
256 LDEV limit per control unit applies to both:

-Physical number of LDEVS
-LDEVS that happen to have addresses above 256
Note: The information below assumes the Sun StorEdge[TM] 99xx array is configured with Sun supported HBAs. The 256 limit may be due to a third party HBA issue, as opposed to an HDLM issue as documented below.

Steps to Follow
HDLM v. 5.4 Solaris[TM] Hosts User's Guide (pg. 12, Table 2.3) documents a "maximum value" of 256 LDEVS/control unit on a Solaris[TM] host.
This maximum value apllies to:

1. configuring more than 256 LDEVS on a host where format presents a total of 257 physical LDEVS (this is the more obvious inference)

2. LDEVS with *addresses* that are larger than 256 (this is the less obvious inference) In the example below, format presents a total of 4 LDEVS, one of which has an address higher than 256.

Starting with the Sun StorEdge 9990, Storage Navigator can create up to 1023 LDEVS per control unit. This is not possible with the 9910/9960/9970/9980 which are all restricted to 256 LDEVs per control unit. Therefore, customer's are able to create LDEV addresses larger than 256.

c3t4d257 <----------not supported due to the limit

Format will present the c3t4d257 LDEV, but this configuration is not supported none the less. This issue is logged as an RFE with engineering and will be addressed in a future microcode release.

Internal Comments
Per HDS Alert HDLM_039230, this is an RFE to be addressed in a future microcode release, but they didn't give any timeline as to when it would be addressed.
