Description
This document contains information for diagnosing, testing, and resolving memory related issues in Sun Fire[TM] v60/65x systems.



Steps to Follow
Causes and Solutions

Fault :  Not all RAM can be seen by the system.

Cause 1 : The system has disabled the bank during its first ever POST, but it can be cleared by doing the procedure below.

Cause 2 : Must have 2 x 512mb DIMMs  installed in bank 1.

Cause 3 : Faulty DIMMs permanently disabling a DIMM  socket.

Cause 4 : Faulty DIMM  sockets on system board.

Resolution

Solution 1 :

Power on system

Press F2 <setup> when logo appears

Select - Advanced

Select - Memory Configuration   you should see which banks are installed and if they have been disabled.

Select - Change 'Extended Memory Test' to every location and 'Memory Retest' to enabled.

Press F10 to save and exit, then power cycle the system.  The system will retest all installed RAM and should enable the previously disabled RAM banks.

Solution 2: Install memory in pairs, beginning with Bank 1, Slots 1A and 1B.

Solution 3:  Replace DIMM.  Some DIMMs can cause the system board slot which they have been installed into to be become permanently faulty.

Solution 4:  Replace system board.

General Info

Install memory in pairs, beginning with Bank 1, Slots 1A and 1B.

DIMM failure LEDs are located between the DIMM sockets and CPU 1.

An illuminated LED indicates a double-bit DIMM error.
