Description
How to connect a Terminal concentrator to a Sun Fire[TM] V480

Steps to Follow
The following cable connections are necessary for Annex terminal concentrator to be connected to Sun Fire[TM] V480 (make sure that the port is configured properly in the terminal concentrator):
part# 530-1871
|
V480<----->RJ45-to-DB25><Null Modem adapter><gender changer>--------<TC
| |
part#530-2889 part#530-2152

The RJ45 network cable (pn 530-1871) and the RJ45-DB25 adapter (part# 530-2889) are supplied with the V480 install kit. The custom  RJ45-DB25 cable (part# 530-2152) ships with the TC. The Null Modem adapter and the Gender Changer connectors can be purchased at any electronics store.

The Null Modem adapter is necessary to flip the RX/TX signals, since both the system and the terminal are considered DTE devices.

The combination of cables and adapters shown on the above diagram works to convert from RJ45 to DB25 and back to RJ45.

Note: Sun doesn't provide a single pre-made cable to connect V480 to Annex terminal concentrator. Sun only provides what's necessary to attach a basic console from another workstation or ASCII terminal. If you want a single RJ45-RJ45 cable without any adapters to go directly from TC to V480, this does require a custom cable to be made according to the different pinouts on both ends.

If your customer or cable contractor wishes to make a custom cable for this connection, use the following pinout:

V480 End (RJ45) Annex End (RJ45)
1(RTS)----------------8(CTS)
2(DTR)----------------7(DSR)
3(TxD)----------------5(RxD)
4(REF)NC NC4(DCD)
5(REF)----------------6(GND)
6(RxD)----------------3(TxD)
7(DSR)----------------2(DTR)
8(CTS)----------------1(RTS)

NOTE#1: Pin 4 is not connected on either end.

NOTE#2: This is an asymmetric cable - one end must plug into the Annex and the other end must plug into the system. If this cable is reversed the devices will not communicate.

Please note that this cable pinout is valid for most Sun systems that use an RJ45 serial port connection (Netra[TM], Sun Fire[TM] V480s, Sun Fire[TM] B1600 chassis, etc).

If you are using the micro-annex terminal concentrator (370-1434) there is a cable that is available as a Sun fru that will allow a single cable connection between the terminal concentrator and Sun systems that use the "Cisco standard rj45 serial connector" such as the serial port on the 480 and the serial connection on RSC and ALOM. It is part number 180-2001 and is detailed in the Notes of the System Handbook's Terminal Concentrator page:

http://support.us.oracle.com/handbook_internal/Devices/Communication/COMM_Term_Concentr.html

please note the cable is not reversable and the end marked p1 should be connected to the TC for a proper connection.

This cable is not supplied with these servers and is actually a fru for some Sun StorEdge[TM] products that also utilize this

Terminal Concentrator.

FE note: Replacements for PN530-1871 and PN530-2889 are also available in the T3 Diagnostic Cable Kit, PN370-4119.
