Description

Sun Fire[TM] V210 and Sun Fire[TM] V240 servers have two serial ports, labelled SERIAL MGT and 10101.

Which serial port should I use?

Solution

Steps to Follow

On a Sun Fire[TM] V210/v240 the SERIAL MGT port accepts an RJ-45 connector.
This port is designed for Advanced Lights Out Management (ALOM) and system console use only.

Note: Do not attach any general purpose serial devices such as serial printer, UPS, modem to this
port.

The port labeled 10101 accepts a DB-9 connector, this is the port to be used for general purpose serial data transfer.

The default serial connection settings are listed as shown:

Parameter Setting
Connector SERIAL MGT or 10101
Rate 9600 baud
Parity None
Stop bits 1
Data bits 8

If you need to connect to the SERIAL MGT port using either a DB-9 or a DB-25 connector, use an adapter to perform the crossovers given as shown:

RJ-45 to DB-9 Adapter Crossovers
Serial Port (RJ-45 Connector) Pin Adapter (DB-9) Pin
