Goal

To upgrade System Controllers (SC's) in a Sun Fire[TM] 12K/15K/E20K/E25K server, you must follow the steps detailed in the System Management Services (SMS) Installation Guide for your version of SMS.

When skipping versions (for example, if you upgrade from SMS version 1.2 to version 1.6,) the inbetween versions must be used to get to 1.4.1 and then with Patch ID 137195-01 you can go straight to version 1.6.

All existing SMS 1.5, 1.4.1, 1.4, 1.3, 1.2, and 1.1 users are encouraged to migrate to SMS 1.6 at this time.
  • Sustaining support for SMS 1.5 was discontinued effective July 30, 2008.
  • Sustaining support for SMS 1.4.1 was discontinued effective July 15, 2006.
  • Sustaining support for SMS 1.3 was discontinued effective October 5, 2005.
  • Sustaining support for SMS 1.4, 1.2, and 1.1 was discontinued effective June 9, 2004.
As of July 30, 2006, SMS 1.6 is the only supported SMS release.

Solution

Note: Before upgrading, make sure that failover between the two System Controllers is active, that no files are queued in `showdatasync`, and that a test failover between the two System Controllers works.

At the end of the upgrade process, both system controllers must have the same version of SMS software.

When upgrading, follow the upgrade path as follows:

From ...
SMS 1.1 --> All patches up to date --> upgrade to SMS 1.2 *
SMS 1.2 --> All patches up to date --> smsupgrade to SMS 1.3 *
SMS 1.3 --> All patches up to date --> smsupgrade to SMS 1.4.1
SMS 1.4 --> All patches up to date --> smsupgrade to SMS 1.4.1 *
SMS 1.4 --> All patches up to date --> smsupgrade to SMS 1.5 *
SMS1.4.1 --> SMS1.6 ( See Patch 137195-01 Readme for instructions) *
SMS 1.4.1 --> All patches up to date --> smsupgrade to SMS 1.5
SMS 1.5 --> All Patches up to date --> smsupgrade to SMS 1.6
* Upgrade is not reversible. You will not be able use smsversion to revert back to the old installation after the upgrade.

SMS 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.4.1 , 1.5 & 1.6 have two versions of software, one for Solaris[TM] 8 Operating System(OS), and one for Solaris[TM] 9 OS (or 9 and 10 for SMS 1.6). Please use the correct version of software for your upgrade path.

SMS 1.6

  • SC Requirements
SMS 1.6 has different binary packages for the Solaris 9 OS and the Solaris 10 OS on the SCs. You must install the correct SMS package for your OS version. For more information about the correct package to use for your version of the Solaris OS, refer to the System Management Services (SMS) 1.6 Installation Guide.

Note: that SMS 1.6 with Solaris 10 is not supported on CP1500s see Alert "Memory Shortage on Sun Fire 12K/15K CP1500 System Controllers Running Solaris 10 (Doc ID 1017340.1)".

For more details about upgrading the SC OS and SMS at the same time see "Sun Fire[TM] 12K/15K: How to migrate System Controllers from Solaris 8/SMS1.3 to Solaris 9/SMS 1.4.1 (Doc ID 1010912.1)"

Customers can download SMS 1.6  as <Patch 10264594>.
Internally you can download old SMS versions from here: http://panacea.uk.oracle.com/twiki/bin/view/Products/ProdInfoStarcatSmsSoftware.

See the TSC patch page http://panacea.uk.oracle.com/twiki/bin/view/Products/ProdPatchesFirmwareStarcat for all SMS recommended patches.

Without the patch, the following error is given when upgrading;

./smsupgrade
/var/tmp/sms_1_4_1_sparc/System_Management_Services_1.4.1/Product
Library file "/usr/lib/fm/libdiagcode.so.1" not installed.
Fatal error: SMS Version 1.4.1 could not be installed. Please correct any reported issues and restart smsupgrade.

BugID: 6431521 Inconsistency between SMS 1.6 's Release Note doc & Install doc. (removed reference to Patch ID 113027-05 from this doc)

There have been several questions of confusion about the minimum Solaris 8 requirements for different versions of SMS. For the software itself, Solaris 8 02/02 is the minimum version needed. This will support all platforms with US-III+ processors in the domains. However, in order to use US-IV or US-IV+ processors, the SC must be running a minimum Solaris 8 02/04. Please understand that the requirement here is based on the processors, not SMS. This is not clearly stated in the SMS 1.5 Installation Guide, so please refer to the SMS 1.6 Release Notes for the most recent info.
