Goal

General understanding of the different types of Sun Ray network configurations that can be deployed.

Solution

Description
This document outlines the main differences between supported Sun Ray[TM] network configurations.


Steps to Follow
Private interconnect vs VLAN vs LAN:
Dedicated, private interconnect :
  1. Completely physically private network for the Sun Ray[TM] traffic.

  2. To configure use  /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utadm -a interface-name

  3. There will be only Sun Ray[TM] traffic on the Sun Ray[TM] private interconnect of the Sun Ray[TM] server.

  4. All traffic in the Sun Ray[TM] private network is controlled and limited by Sun Ray[TM] servers.

  5. The use of routers inside the Sun Ray[TM] private network is not supported. If you want to use routers, you must use a Sun Ray[TM] LAN deployment.

  6. This is recommended over VLAN since the physical bandwidth is not shared in this case.

  7. The Sun Ray[TM] server will provide both DHCP addresses and Sun Ray[TM] specific vendor tags to the Sun Ray[TM] DTUs.

Dedicated interconnect plus VLAN :

  1. Logically private network for the Sun Ray[TM] traffic, physical bandwidth resources are shared with uncontrolled (non Sun Ray[TM]) traffic.

  2. To configure use  /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utadm -a vlan-id

  3. There will be only Sun Ray[TM] traffic on the Sun Ray[TM] private interconnect of the Sun Ray[TM] server, especially, you still have to configure a Sun Ray[TM] private interconnect. If you want to share traffic on the Sun Ray[TM] interconnect, you must use a Sun Ray[TM] LAN deployment.

  4. Switch backplane bandwidth and/or link between switches is shared.

  5. The use of routers inside the (logical) Sun Ray[TM] private network is not supported. If you want to use routers, you must use a Sun Ray[TM] LAN deployment.

  6. Improperly configured VLAN can lead to loss of Sun Ray[TM] packets. You also must make sure that Sun Ray[TM] traffic has a high priority on all shared network components.

  7. The Sun Ray[TM] server will provide both DHCP addresses and Sun Ray[TM] specific vendor tags to the Sun Ray[TM] DTUs.

Public interconnect (Shared)

Requires SRSS 4.0 or higher.

  1. Public network, physical bandwidth resources are shared with uncontrolled (non Sun Ray[TM]) traffic.

  2. To configure use /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utadm -A subnet  or  /opt/SUNWut/sbin/utadm -L on 

  3. The Sun Ray[TM] server's primary interface is used.

  4. The use of routers is supported. Especially, you can have routers between the Sun Ray[TM] server and the Sun Ray[TM] DTUs ( remote shared subnet ).

  5. Sun Ray[TM] servers in the same failover group should have at least one shared subnet.

  6. Either the Sun Ray[TM] server or an existing corporate DHCP server can provide DHCP addresses. Either the Sun Ray[TM] server or an existing corporate DHCP server can provide Sun Ray[TM] specific vendor tags to the Sun Ray[TM] DTUs. In the recommended configuration, an existing corporate DHCP server provides DHCP addresses, and the Sun Ray[TM] server provides Sun Ray[TM] specific vendor tags to the Sun Ray[TM] DTUs. Please refer to the references section for pointers to additional configuration options.
