Bug Id
<SUNBUG: 6643794>

Product
Sun StorageTek 6140 Array

Date of Resolved Release
16-Jan-2009

Sun Storagetek 6140 arrays may cause servers to lose access to data due to SCSI timeouts:

1. Impact

Heavy read I/O on a Sun StorageTek 6140 may cause an initiator to abort all running I/O to the array, causing a host to time out on pending requests. This can result in a loss of access to array devices and the stored data.

2. Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platforms:
  • Sun StorageTek 6140 Arrays without firmware 06.60.11.10 (as delivered in patch 137934-01)
3. Symptoms

If the described issue occurs, the array may end up in a deadlock situation during heavy read I/O.  This may cause the attached server to loose access to data. A Solaris server attached to the array will show the following message in the "/var/adm/messages" file:
Aug 10 17:04:02 jesbuild1 SCSI transport failed: reason 'timeout': giving up
Aug 10 17:04:02 jesbuild1 scsi: [ID 107833 kern.warning] WARNING:

4. Workaround

There is no workaround for this issue.  Please see the Resolution section below.

5. Resolution

This issue is addressed on the following platforms:
  • Sun StorageTek 6140 Array with firmware 06.60.11.10 (as delivered in patch 137934-01) or later
The firmware version listed above is provided as part of the Sun StorageTek Common Array Manager 6.1.0 release bundle.
