Impact

This issue causes a system panic.


Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following releases:

  • StorEdge 5210 NAS without firmware 4.20.M2B3 (as delivered in patch 118216-11)
  • StorageTek 5220 NAS without firmware 4.20.M2B3 (as delivered in patch 119353-01)
  • StorEdge 5310 NAS without firmware 4.20.M2B3 (as delivered in patch 119351-09)
  • StorageTek 5320 NAS without firmware 4.20.M2B3 (as delivered in patch 119352-04)

Note: this issue is with release 4.20 M0 and 4.20 M1 of the NAS OS.

The NAS OS version can be found on the main panel of the Web Admin or by issuing the 'version' command from the console.

The panic stack trace is similar to the following:

Workaround

There is no workaround for this issue.

Do not disable checkpoints, which are enabled by default, due to CR 6505434.

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

  • StorEdge 5210 NAS with patch 118216-11 or later

  • StorageTek 5320 NAS with patch 119352-04 or later

The problem is happening when a checkpoint in an almost full and fragmented file system is being deleted. The fix is to make sure that the number of pages in transaction limit is not exceeded.

Other issues are also resolved by upgrading per above:




6452655 Postmark performance severely degraded with release 4.12 build 20
6491929 volume erroneously reports it's full and is put read only by the head.

Impact

This issue causes a system panic.

Contributing Factors

Checkpoints must be enabled.

Symptoms

System panic.

Root Cause

The problem is happening when a checkpoint in an almost full and
fragmented file system is being deleted. This problem is not easy
to reproduce. The fix is to make sure that the number of pages in
transaction limit is not exceeded.

The issue was resolved with a maintenance release of the NAS OS.
(4.20 M2)

Disable checkpointing on all volumes.
