Bug Id
<SUNBUG: 6592230>

Date of Resolved Release
30-OCT-2007

Impact

The NAS head may panic resulting in the NDMP backup job not completing.

Contributing Factors

This issue occurs on the following releases:

  • StorEdge 5210 NAS with patches 118216-12 and 118216-13 and without patch 118216-14
  • StorEdge 5310 NAS with patches 119351-11 and 119351-12 and without patch 119351-13
  • StorageTek 5220 NAS with patches 119353-03 and 119353-04 and without patch 119353-05
  • StorageTek 5320 NAS with patches 119352-06 and 119352-07 and without patch 119352-08

This issue occurs during back up of directories consisting of files with long filenames.

This issue is found in releases 4.21 M0 and 4.21 M1 of the StorageTek NAS OS.

The NAS OS version can be found on the main panel of the Web Admin or by issuing the 'version' command from the console.

Symptoms

The NAS head will panic and reboot. The following can be observed in the "dbglog" file.

Workaround

Do not back up directories consisting of files with long filenames until the resolution below can be implemented.

Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

  • StorEdge 5210 NAS with patch 118216-14 or later
  • StorEdge 5310 NAS with patch 119351-13 or later
  • StorageTek 5220 NAS with patch 119353-05 or later
  • StorageTek 5320 NAS with patch 119352-08 or later

The above patches deliver NAS OS 4.21 M2.  See also, Sun StorageTek NAS OS Administration Guide (819-4284-11) Page 191: Upgrading NAS Software.

Internal Comments

Release 4.21 M2 (which contains the fix for this issue) has already been posted on sunsolve with the above patch numbers. A new release of 4.21 M2 is in the process of being posted on sunsolve. This release contains the same version of the NAS OS (4.21 M2) but is bundled with a new version of the CSM firmware.

Root Cause -

The cause of the panic is due to a buffer overrun during NDMP_FILE_HISTORY processing.

The code has been modified to prevent overrunning the file name buffer while processing NDMP_FILE_HISTORY.

The issue was resolved with a maintenance release of the
StorageTek NAS OS. (4.21 M2)

Corrective Action:

Supported Workaround (if available)

There is no workaround short of not backing up directories
consisting of files with long filenames.
