Date of Workaround Release
23-AUG-2004

Date of Resolved Release
08-JAN-2007

Impact

Inserting a disk drive assembly (hot plugging) into a Sun StorEdge S1 array may cause a power supply (PSU) reset. If the Sun StorEdge S1 array is used as a boot device, the PSU reset may result in an unintentional reboot of the server.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur on the following platforms:

SPARC Platform

  • Sun StorEdge S1 Array

The described issue only occurs during a disk drive (hot swap) insertion.

Note: If the 12V pre-charge signal (on the disk drive) does not make contact before the 12V signals during connector mating, the failure occurs. The cause of the pre-charge signal not making contact prior to the 12V signals has been narrowed down to side-to-side movement of the drive during insertion.

Symptoms

There are no symptoms that would alert the user of this issue. An array PSU reset subsequent to a disk drive "hot swap" is the only indicator.

Workaround

To reduce the chances of the described issue from occurring, apply one of the following workarounds:

1. When adding a disk drive assembly into a Sun StorEdge S1 array, apply equal pressure to both sides of the front of the drive, and firmly push in until the locking handle engages.

The above information can also be found in the "Sun StorEdge S1 Array Installation and Maintenance Manual" (p74-75) located at:

2. Do not perform "hot swap" disk removal/replacement procedures on a Sun StorEdge S1 array.

Resolution

This issue has been addressed with a kit (Sun part number 555-1943-01) that contains three easy to apply self adhesive shims and an instruction sheet.

The kit is available through Sun Service at no charge.

Note: As of 19-Jan-2007 this part may not be stocked in all geographical locations but is on order.
