Bug Id
<SUNBUG: 6547423>

Date of Workaround Release
01-JUN-2007

Date of Resolved Release
24-JUL-2007

Impact

Tape drives may not be available for NDMP backups and restores.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following products:

  • StorEdge 5210 NAS with firmware 4.21 B123 (as delivered in patch 118216-12) and without patch 118216-13
  • StorEdge 5310 NAS with firmware 4.21 B123 (as delivered in patch 119351-11) and without patch 119351-12
  • StorageTek 5220 NAS with firmware 4.21 B123 (as delivered in patch 119353-03) and without patch 119353-04
  • StorageTek 5320 NAS with firmware 4.21 B123 (as delivered in patch 119352-06) and without patch 119352-07

This issue was introduced with the above firmware and prior releases are not affected.

If multiple drives share the same scsi target ID (from the host's point of view). It this occurs only one drive will be visible to the backup software. Hooking a SCSI tape library with multiple drives to an FC HBA via an FC/SCSI switch is such an example.

To determine an affected system, issue the 'version' cli command. The output will be similar to one of the following:

 NAS>version
 StorageTek Model 5210 NAS S/N SE52102005102101 Version 4.21 M0 (Build 123)
 StorageTek Model 5310 NAS S/N SE53102005102101 Version 4.21 M0 (Build 123)
 StorageTek Model 5310C NAS S/N SE5310C2005102101-H1 Version 4.21 M0 (Build 123)
 StorageTek Model 5220 NAS S/N SE52202005102101 Version 4.21 M0 (Build 123)
 StorageTek Model 5320 NAS S/N SE53202005102101 Version 4.21 M0 (Build 123)
 StorageTek Model 5320C NAS S/N SE5310C2005102101-H1 Version 4.21 M0 (Build 123)

Symptoms

The command "ndmp devices" only shows the tape library and one tape drive, while multiple drives are expected. An error log similar to the following one will show up in the NAS syslog:

  04/17/07 12:32:38 E scsi_sasd_symlink: /dev/isp2t7D1: error 17

Workaround

Do not install NAS OS release 4.21 M0 as delivered in the above patches.

Important Note: The above firmware patches mentioned in the Contributing Factors are still available on SunSolve. It was determined that due to other advantages of these patches they were not withdrawn from SunSolve.

Resolution

This issue is addressed in the following releases:

  • StorEdge 5210 NAS with firmware 4.21 M1 B19 (as delivered in patch 118216-13) or later
  • StorEdge 5310 NAS with firmware 4.21 M1 B19 (as delivered in patch 119351-12) or later
  • StorageTek 5220 NAS with firmware 4.21 M1 B19 (as delivered in patch 119353-04) or later
  • StorageTek 5320 NAS with firmware 4.21 M1 B19 (as delivered in patch 119352-07) or later

1. Impact:

The un-discovered tape drives are not available for NDMP backup/restore.

2. Contributing Factors:

If multiple drives share the same scsi target ID (from the
host's point of view), only one drive will be visible to the
backup software. Hooking a SCSI tape library with multiple
drives to an FC HBA via an FC/SCSI switch is such an
example.

tape drive, while multiple drives are expected. An error log
similar to the following one will show up in the NAS syslog:

04/17/07 12:32:38 E scsi_sasd_symlink: /dev/isp2t7D1: error 17

4. Relief/Workaround:

Do not install NAS OS release 4.21 or Upgrade NAS OS to release 4.21 M1

5. Resolution:

Upgrade NAS OS to release 4.21 M1

6. Internal Section:

Escalation IDs: N/A
Pending Patches:
The affected software release is 4.21 B123 (for all platforms) with the
following patch ids:
StorEdge 5210 NAS software update - 118216-12

StorEdge 5310 NAS software update - 119351-11

StorageTek 5220 NAS software update - 119353-03

StorageTek 5320 NAS software update - 119352-06

The software release with the fix is not yet available. The version will
be 4.21 M1

Since the fix is not released, we do not have patch ids. Normally the
last number of the patch id is incremented by one (ie for 5320 it would
be 119352-07).

However this could change if for some reason there is a problem with the
patch release process and a respin of the patch is required.
