Applies to:

Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System - Version: Not Applicable and later   [Release: N/A and later ]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

Repeating H-Bot failures on the same rail.
H-Bot timeouts
H-Bot restart failures
5070 and 5010 errors

Result code
RC5070
RC5010

Cause

Possible rail communication problem. Terminators are the most likely cause for poor rail communications but it can also be caused by a faulty HBS card, or rarely, copper strip contamination.

Solution

Stats Network Command Useful - Do not overlook rail communication problems any time multiple bot failures occur on any rail.  The easiest way to display the communication statistics is to issue the "stats network" command at the CLI.  Look for errors, frames and drops.  Normally these number should be in the 1 to 4 digit range depending on when the library was last booted.  Any of these numbers in the 5+ digit range are cause for concern. At no time should the errors be more than 5% of the received packets.  Typical numbers are below 1%.   Contact Tape Hardware Support for additional help as needed.

The attached example shows low usage but 5% of the packets on Rail 3 are receiving errors and should be watched.  In normal operations the packets are in the millions range after a few months of usage.
