Applies to:

Sun StorageTek VSM System - Version: 5 and later   [Release: 5.0 and later ]
IBM z/OS on System z

Symptoms

VCF4 card type in VSM5 or VSM5C fails with FSC3931 and results in a cluster outage.

Cause

The FSC3931 is a continuous channel interrupt (hot interrupt).  This failure causes a series of FSC3931 check zeros and each check zero fences an IUP until all IUPs in the cluster have been fenced.

Solution

The solution to avoid the problem on the VSM5 is to upgrade to D02.12.08.00 or higher level of microcode.  The solution to avoid the problem on the VSM5C is to upgrade to H02.12.08.00 or higher level of microcode.

If running a lower level of microcode and this problem is encountered then the recovery plan is to perform a cluster recovery or perform a disruptive recovery of the subsystem.  Contact support for the current version of the cluster recovery procedure.  During either recovery procedure the suspect VCF4 card should be replaced.
