Symptoms

The following error messages may be seen on the System Controller (SC) or lom console during SCPOST (System Controller Power On Self Test) when an SC is first powered on or it's been rebooted.  The SC might also appear to be stuck in a reboot loop (never coming up to the scapp or lom prompt).
NOTE:  SCPOST is only seen by connecting directly to the serial port or via a loghost if one is configured.
Example #1:
After connecting to the SC Serial port, the following appear in console output:
SYSTEM CONTROLLER(SC) POST 46 2006/09/26 07:52

Above is not an exhaustive list of error examples possible.

Cause

The root cause of this issue is a dying (or dead) battery which is located on the System Controller (SC).
NOTE:  The battery is located on an IDPROM card which is on the SC itself.

Solution

Neither the IDPROM card, nor the battery is replaceable.  The System Controller (SC) must be replaced.
  • On Sun Fire 3800, 4800, 4810, 6800, E4900, and E6900, the part which needs to be replaced is called the SC.
  • On Sun Fire v1280, E2900 and Netra 1280, and 1290 the part which needs to be replaced is called the IB_SSC.
Customers must contact Support Services by opening a Service Request and mention this knowledge article.  Please have the console log file showing the error messages in question available so as to speed up resolution and dispatch.

A Field Engineer will be dispatched to perform the replacement of this component (it is not a customer serviceable component).

Internal Only Information

Dispatch the replacement of the SC or IB_SSC to the field.  Make sure to utilize the
Canned Action Plan in ATR relating to System Controller Replacement so that
the Field Engineer is provided with the instructions necessary to complete the
service action.
