Sun Storage SL8500 Modular Library System - Version: Not Applicable and later   [Release: NA and later ]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Symptoms

PTP initialization errors after code upgrade
Pass thru Port will not initialize
FSC5017
Error 5017

Changes

SL8500 firmware 4.73 was installed.

Cause

SL8500 firmware 4.73 made change to the servo profile of the PTP; increased the current to the PTP sled to provide more margin moving in the channel.  With this change, if the long PTP belt is not tensioned correctly, it can cause it to slip on the belt pulley.  The belt tension cannot be adjusted in the field and the PTP must be replaced.

Solution

Work Around:
Engineering has come up with a procedure to tension the belt.

Refer to the attached document:
SL8500 PTP Belt Tightening Procedure

The fix for this issue will be a correction in next release in SL8500 firmware.  Until that time, the work around should be used to reduce the number of PTPs that would be replaced in the field.
