Symptoms
Installing Solaris[TM] 2.5.1 11/97 or Solaris 2.6[TM] 5/98 on Ultra 5, 10, 60, 80, E220r, or E420r with 440 or 450 Mhz CPUs, whether interactively using a CDROM or doing a Jumpstart[TM] install will fail with the message "hme0 - link down".
Another failure symptom is multiple keyboard input repeats, or repeating keystrokes.
To prevent this, the Operating Environment Installation CD p/n 704-6914-10 (Sept 99) or
704-7076-10 (Feb 2000) must be used. Complete procedures are documented in
the manual(s) 804-6657-11(Sept 99) or 806-4005-10 (Feb 2000)
"Installing Solaris 2.5.1 or Solaris 2.6 Software on 419+ MHz Systems" or
"Installing Solaris[TM] Software for Selected Hardware".
Look for the OECD and documentation in the shrink wrapped packet
that says "Binary Code License" or inside front cover of
"Installing Solaris Software for Selected Hardware" manual.

Resolution
Interactive Installations and JumpStart installations are discussed below.
Interactive Installation:

The basic procedure to do a CDROM installation is:

ok boot cdrom  (using the Operating Environment Installation CD)

The OE CD will prompt for information, then automatically eject and ask
for the Solaris[TM] Software CD (2.6 5/98 or 2.5.1 11/97) to be inserted.

Notes:

Only initial installs are supported.

A "boot cdrom" using the OE CD will erase all information on the hard drive.

The OE CD contents are copied into the swap slice of the disk.
The Ultra[TM] then reboots from the swap slice.  When the install is
completed, root will be slice 0 but the starting cylinder will
NOT be 0.

If the Ultra machine needs to "boot cdrom -s" for
a troubleshooting procedure, use the OE CD or a Solaris[TM] 7
Software CD.  A "boot cdrom -s" using the OE CD will NOT
erase the information on the disk.

For detailed output, see the section below, "What a cdrom installation looks
like".

Jumpstart[TM] Installation:

Use the Operating Environment Installation CD's modify_install_server
script to modify the Solaris jumpstart "image".

Put the OE CD in the Jumpstart install or boot server's CDROM drive and:
NOTE:  If a separate boot server exists, modify_install_server must be run on BOTH the boot
and the install server

    #cd /cdrom/cdrom/s0
    # ./modify_install_server -r 2.6 -d /export/Install/2.6_598

or

    # ./modify_install_server -r 2.5.1 -d /export/Install/2.5.1_1197

Notes:

It is necessary to use the OE CD p/n 704-7076-10 revision to support a
Jumpstart install.  -10 revision or greater is needed.

The modified Jumpstart "image" will still support other architectures and CPU
speeds.

For detailed output, see the section below, "What modify_install_server looks
like".

The OE CD will also install the packages needed to support the Sun[TM] Elite 3D (AFB)
or PGX32[TM] frame buffer, also known as the "Raptor" card.  Reference Problem Resolution <Document: 1003009.1>.

If Solaris 2.5.1 11/97 or Solaris 2.6 5/98 is already installed and the higher
speed CPUs are being installed, be sure to install the latest kernel patches
prior to the CPU installations.

The minimum kernel patch revisions for the 440/450 Mhz CPUs are:
                Solaris 2.5.1 11/97  >= 103640-24
                Solaris 2.6 5/98     >= 105181-10

Problem Symptoms Booting with a Solaris 2.6 5/98 or 2.5.1 11/97 CD:

The Ultra machines will have the following problem symptoms if booted
directly from a Solaris 2.6 5/98 or 2.5.1 11/97 CD:

ok boot cdrom (using Solaris 2.6 5/98 CD)

"hme0 link down" (Sometimes this message is repeated continually)

Other times, the message is seen only once and the install progresses
as expected but at reboot, keyboard input will echo.  For example, when
prompted for Power Management configuration and input an n for No -
multiple n's are input like this: nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

This system appears to contain a version of Solaris.
The Solaris installer does not allow upgrading. If you
choose to use this installer an initial install will be
    required.
