One of the problems customers have had is confusion over the types of cartridge labels that are required on the media.
  • Half Inch Tape, 3840/9840/9940, Label Information:

 

StorageTek Multi-Media robotic libraries identify tape cartridges by the barcode on the label. Three possible label types are recognized by StorageTek libraries, 1/2" tape labels, DLT tape labels, and LTO tape labels.

 

Half Inch type tapes, like 9840, use an adhesive label. Only two companies make labels supported by StorageTek libraries, Engineering Data Product/Colorflex, that make the trioptic label and WrightLine/American Eagle that make the tri-code label.

  • DLT Label Information:

 

StorageTek Multi-Media robotic libraries identify tape cartridges by the barcode on the label. Three possible label types are recognized by StorageTek libraries, 1/2" tape labels, DLT tape labels, and LTO tape labels.

 

DLT type tapes use a punched out label that may or may not have an adhesive back. They are slid into the label recess on the face of the cartridge. DLT labels used in StorageTek Libraries can be made by any vendor that produces a label that meets the StorageTek DLT Label Specification.

Types of bar code labels:
LTO style
Bar code format consists of six (6) sequential data characters and two media ID characters surrounded on top and bottom with start and stop characters.

 

DLT and 9x40 style
Bar code format consists of six (6) sequential data characters and one media ID characters surrounded on top and bottom with start and stop characters.

3 classifications of labels

Supported Label:
A StorageTek library product specification indicates which label specification(s) the library is designed to operate with. It can then be said that the library supports any label which conforms to the label specification(s). If a supported label cannot be read by the library, StorageTek engineering is obligated to investigate and provide a library vision system fix (hardware and/or software) to make the label consistently readable in the library.

Tolerated Label

A label that is not specified by a StorageTek Label specification but which may be compatible with some StorageTek Library's vision system. (e.g. ATL or Breece Hill DLT cartridge label)

These are labels which nominally might meet vision system criteria for a readable label, but that do not comply with a StorageTek Label Specification. At StorageTek's engineering discretion, vision software may be modified to attempt to read a tolerated label. However, there is not any obligation on StorageTek's part to ensure labels can be read reliably or that all libraries can use the same Tolerated label types. Indeed there cannot be, because StorageTek does not have any control over label characteristics or quality and library hardware/software designs have different capabilities. Use of such labels compromises the integrity of the library system and are not recommended.

If at all possible, it is recommended that the Tolerated labels be replaced with Supported labels as soon as possible. Engineering recommends ordering new labels with the same Volsers as existing Tolerated labels. Replacing a particular Tolerated label with the same VOLSER number Supported label will avoid having to "reinventory" backup cartridges. Care must be taken when ordering the new labels. The new label must have the same VOLSER that the backup software sees, so pay attention to leading and trailing spaces, etc. Cartridge type must also be specified for the new labels (i.e. DLT Compac III, Compac III XT-30, or Compac IV). Specific VOLSER ranges can be ordered from EDP. Normally STK cost for labels is around $40 for 200 labels (sequential numbers). Random numbered labels (sequences of less than 200) are $.35 per label, minimum order of $25. Special colors etc are additional $.15 per label. Contact EDP

Unsupported Label

A label that is not specified by a StorageTek Label specification and is not compatible with a StorageTek library's vision system.


Tape library, 9710, 9714, 9330, L5500, L700, L180, 9730, Volser number, L20, L40, Tri-optic, L80, Barcode Spec 3 of 9 ANSI MH10.8M-1983, 9310, SL500, SL8500, DLT label, The Bar Code shall be code 39 from AIM Uniform Symbology Specification USS-39 and ANSI MH10.8M 1993, Barcode, Volser label, LTO, STK libraries and Microcode are designed to work within a very limited range of acceptance on label design. STK does not contend that it will be able to read or use any and all barcode
