Symptoms
Mismatch between TSM element number, drive and RMT
Library audit fails
TSM had physical tape drive assigned to virtual tape drive
Tape serial number mismatch

Resolution
Resolution information

Problem Statement:

There are several identifiers associated with each tape drive:

Serial number assigned to the drive at the factory

Element number assigned according to where the drive is placed in the library

LUN number assigned either by software or by setting a parameter or a switch on the drive

Device address assigned by the operating system on the client system

In a VTL, these are augmented by:

VTL Drive Name Assigned in the VTL

Fibre Channel Target WWPN The VTL Fibre Channel Port Name for this drive

Fibre Channel Initiator WWPN The client system Fibre Channel Port Name for this drive

All these identities must line up. That is to say, whether the backup software addresses a tape drive by element number or LUN number or device address, the same drive must respond.

Method:

Maintain a table with all the information for all the tape drives. At a minimum, track the seven pieces of information outlined above. The following pieces of information can be supplied by the VTL console:

VTL Drive Name Assigned in the VTL

Serial number assigned to the drive at the factory

Element number assigned according to where the drive is placed in the library

LUN number assigned either by software or by setting a parameter or a switch on the drive
