Symptoms
This problem occurs when an existing volume of a given size, physically located between other existing volumes is deleted and recreated with a smaller capacity in its original location. The disk space equaling the difference between the size of the original volume and the size of the new volume in effect vanishes and can no longer be used.

Resolution
The problem can be seen by doing a telnet to the NAS head :
Choose Menu Item D (Disks & Volumes) :
On the resulting menu, enter the letter for the volume in question:

In the above example, the volume /test/Vol1 originally was 2048000 sectors or 9.590G, it was then deleted and recreated at 10240000 sectors or 4.793G.  Doing the math, we take the starting sector of the newly created volume On partition 2 (536871152) and add to it the size of the newly created volume (10240000) to determine the effective start of the 'NEXT' partition, we get 547111152 as the starting sector. Looking at the output above, we see the start block of the third partition is 557351152. The 'MISSING' space is the difference between the actual starting sector of the next partiton and calculated starting sector. In the above example, we lost 10240000 sectors or 5Gb
Here is what is happening ...
On a disk that has existing partitons (/file systems like this ..)

Deleting partition 2 (in this case it is file system 2 - /testVol1)
leaves a void of 20480000 (10000 MB).
Now you create a file system on this free partition and this time you chose 5000 MB. The additional 5000MB is now lost (you will never recover this space).

Note the partition 3 still starts at sector 557351152 as before.


Relief/Workaround
The only way today to recover this space is to delete either partition 2 or partition 3 and recreate the deleted partition with ALL of the available space.

There is a CR (6235109) already opened requesting a change in behavior for an upcoming firmware release.

For the moment, when you delete a file system on a partition in the middle of a disk, make sure you create another file system of the same size to prevent the loss of disk space.
