Symptoms

Symptoms:

The network configuring of the Sun Fire [TM] X4100 / X4200 SP (Service Processor) without a default gateway (0.0.0.0) may lead to network and IPMI failures.

Failure modes include:
  • 'IPMI' error messages in the ILOM web GUI
  • Slowness of the ILOM CLI
  • Slowness of the ILOM Java Remote Console KVM functionality
  • Failure of legal ILOM CLI commands
  • Remote "ipmitool" command failures
Some fields in the ILOM web GUI may also not be populated.

Cause

An incorrectly populated gateway (0.0.0.0) may lead to network and IPMI failures.

Solution

Resolution:

This will be automatically resolved by updating the first release of the X4100 / X4200 BIOS and SP firmware with the most recent release.
This can be downloaded from the following location:

https://updates.oracle.com/Orion/Services/download/p10335348_152_Generic.zip?aru=13177465&patch_file=p10335348_152_Generic.zip

Update the firmware using this media.
This media will deliver the following firmware updates:
  • BIOS 42 (0ABGA042)
  • ILOM Service Processor 2.0.2.5
You must make sure your LSI SAS 1064 disk controller firmware is at the following release before the upgrade:
  • LSI MPT SAS Firmware 1.16.40
  • MPT BIOS 6.14.04
To confirm this, press <CTRL><C> to enter the LSI setup utility after power-on.
Revision information will be displayed on screen.

Relief / Workaround:

Note that a router does not need to be physically located or responding at this address.

Steps To Follow:

1) Reset the service processor to remove the failure condition:
Examples of how to reset the service processor are as follows:
  • From the ILOM Web GUI, click on the <Maintenance> tab then click on the <Reset SP> action
  • From the ILOM CLI, execute the following command:
    reset /SP

  • Using the ipmitool binary, execute the following command:
ipmitool -H <SP IP ADDRESS> -U root bmc reset cold

  • You may also reset the ILOM service processor by shutting down the host, and removing and restoring power to the system.
2) Immediately configure a valid gateway IP address (note that no host needs to be configured at this IP address or a non-gateway machine may be used).

Examples of how to set the gateway device are as follows:
  • From the ILOM Web GUI, click on the <Configuration> tab then click on the <Network> tab; Enter an IP address for the "Default Gateway" entry.
  • Alternatively, from the ILOM CLI, execute the following commands:
cd /SP/network
set pendingipgateway= xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
set commitpending=true

  • Note that if a DHCP server is providing the network configuration, it will need to be reconfigured to provide a valid IP address for the default gateway.
