Symptoms
A Sun Fire[TM] V490 or a V890 running Solaris[TM] 8 may panic or fatal reset if the bbc and gptwo drivers were loaded at boot. These drivers are not needed with the UltraSparc[TM] IV multiprocessors

Once these drivers are loaded a 'FATAL Reset' will result if a certain criteria is met. A send mondo panic will then follow due to a cross call made to the core 1 of the fataling CPU by another CPU within the system. In summary, the system suffers a 'Fatal Reset' first and then panics, although the console may only show just the panic.

Resolution
The Sun Fire[TM] V490 & V890, running Solaris[TM] 8 may experience a panic or a fatal reset.

Install patch 112169-04 (SunOS 5.8: platmod patch for Volume System H/W Series Products) and  manually remove the driver entries for the gptwo and bbc drivers from the /etc/name_to_major file.
