Symptoms
After installing a dialin modem on a Sun Fire[TM] V60x or V65x COM2 port the answering modem will ring, connect, then hang. No login prompt appears. There is an active dialin ttymon login process running and the modem can dial out.

Specific Sun Fire servers like these V60x and V65x have an internal jumper that needs to be changed to activate the Data Carrier Detect (DCD) signal used for dialin logins. It is not required for dialout and is not active by default.

When the answering modem connects it sends this DCD signal back to a monitoring login service. In turn, the login service issues a login to the remote user. If this DCD signal is missing, the login service will never know the modems connected. Consequently, the modem will sit there with many lights lit including CD/DCD because the DCD path back to the login service doesn't exist.

Resolution
Within the server towards the rear there is a jumper block located on the Motherboard labeled J5A2.

Positioning the jumper between pins 1 and 2 will enable the DCD signal. When in this position pin 7 on the COM2 port will be DCD. The default jumper position is between pins 3 and 4. Once you enable the modem it will then be able to send back the DCD signal to the login service.
