Sun StorageTek SL8500 Modular Library System
All Platforms
Checked for relevance on 3-Feb-2011.

Symptoms

Defective EPO Switch Cable assembly results in no rail power applied to the library.  This can be detected by the following symptoms:

* No S-bot movement.

* Green LEDs on the rail power supply not illuminated.

* Green rail power LED (left most LED as observed from the rear of the library) on all HBF cards not illuminated.

Cause

Defective EPO Switch Cable Assembly.
Defective SL8500 EPO Switch and Cable assembly results in no rail power applied to the library.

Solution

Steps to Follow

Both front panel and internal EPO switches can be shorted using a jumper wire to help determine if the EPO switches are defective.

* Disconnect internal EPO switch cable connector (J719) from the 4-pin mating connector labeled P719.

* Using a jumper wire, short pin 1 on P719 (this pin is connected to the red wire) to pin 2 on P719 (this pin is connected to the black wire).

Caution:
Do not short pins 3 and 4 (black and white wires) as this will short 24 Volts and blow the fuses within the PDU.

* Disconnect front panel EPO switch cable connector (J752) from the 2-pin mating connector labeled P752.

* Using a jumper wire, short pins 1 and 2.  These pins are connected to white and black wires respectively.

* Close library doors and apply power to the library.  If rail power is applied, s-bot movement will be observed.

Note:
Although all SL8500 cable documentation mentions EPO" (Emergency Power Off), the primary function of these switches is Emergency Robotics Stop or ERS.

Permanent Solution:
Shorting EPO switches is a temporary solution used primarily to determine the functionality of the EPO switches.  The defective EPO switch assembly must be replaced.
