Symptoms
On systems connected to a Sun StorEdge[TM] 3310 SCSI array or JBOD with Fujitsu drives via an Ultra320 SCSI HBA, can experience the following problems.
  • got external SCSI bus reset
  • Target x reducing sync. transfer rate
  • Target x reverting to async. mode

These messages could further be followed by read/write errors such as:

Jan 16 04:04:21 larempdb scsi: [ID 107833 kern.warning] WARNING: /pci@1f,4000/scsi@4/sd@0,5 (sd76):

The above messages could be a result of:

  1. Speed negotiation between the Ultra320 SCSI HBA and the Sun StorEdge 3310 SCSI array.
  2. bug 6195171 - Jasper2 320MB/sec does not function properly with Allegro-9 and Allegro-8.

Allegro drives are Fujitsu drives and all qualified Fujitsu drives for the 3310 are either Allegro-8 or Allegro-9 type drives.

Bug 2124572 is the same as the above bug but is specifically for the LSI 1030 host bus adapter as noticed in the messages below:

Resolution
Please review the following steps.

Refer to <Document: 1012309.1>  SCSI bus reset & transport errors on Sun StorEdge[TM] 3310 SCSI array with Ultra320 SCSI HBA

The above document helps to resolve any issues with the speed negotiation.

If inspite of resolving any issues with the speed negotiation, the problem persists, then most probably you are hitting bug 6195171.

The following patches are available:
SunOS 5.8 (sparc) 115275-07
SunOS 5.9 (sparc) 118558-18
SunOS 5.9 (x86) 119431-02 or Later
SunOS 5.10 (sparc) 119850-09 ( obsolted by 118559-29)
SunOS 5.10 (x86) 119851-09

Currently there is no x86 patch for SunOS 5.8

If the above still doesn't help, the following could contribute to this problem:

a) Disk firmware.
b) Hardware issue ( Cables,HBA,Motherboard etc)

Sun StorageTek 3310 SCSI Array
Sun StorageTek Ultra320 LVD PCI Host Bus Adapter
