Symptoms

While configuring the Sun StorEdge[TM] 5210/5310/5320 NAS Appliance box with Windows ADS, the user might wish to assign quotas through GUI as below :

--> "Manage Quotas"
--> "Configure User and Group Quotas"
--> Click on "Add" button which would popup "Add Quota Setting" screen

In "Add Quota Setting" screen when we select the Windows environment for designated user the drop down "User" list is not automatically populated. On the contrary if we have the NAS configured with NIS on UNIX[R] environment one would see that that "User" drop down list is automatically populated with UNIX Users.

Resolution

When a NAS box is configured with NIS on UNIX environment one observes that the User drop down list is automatically populated. This is because when NIS is enabled on NAS it caches NIS host file in memory. This enables us to see the list of UNIX users in "Add Quota Settings" screen.

However, when joining a Windows DOMAIN and/or ADS the NAS OS is not able to get the copy of the ADS or DOMAIN user list. The "Microsoft Security Policy" prevents the caching of the user list for security reasons.

To populate the "User" drop down list the user has to enter the user data through telnet menu. This is the map where NAS checks for NT DOMAIN info.

From telnet menu :
Select -> X. CIFS/SMB Configuration
-> C. User Mapping
-> 8. Add a map

Now enter each NT DOMAIN that the user will be accessing on this NAS and corresponding quotas set in place.

  1. RID number for Windows users can be made if they are not available.
  2. If the NT DOMAIN user name is the same as their UNIX username then RID and UID will be populated automatically.
  3. Once done, go back to "Add Quota Settings" screen in the GUI and add user quotas.
