Resolution
Resolution Steps

1) Configuration

  • Sun Fire[TM] 280R
  • Host Bus Adaptor (HBA) QLogic QLA10162 (PN 375-3057)
  • Sun StorEdge[TM] 3310 SCSI Array

2) Verify software/firmware

  • Sun StorEdge 3310 SCSI Array firmware is 3.25W (minimum requirement)
  • Driver "qus" is to 112697-04 for Solaris[TM] 8 Operating System, 112706-03 for Solaris[TM] 9 Operating System (minimum requirement)

3) Verify hardware

If the problem is persistent after controller firmware and patch verification.

Given the error message:

Oct 7 17:27:39 calvados f/w initiated BDR fails

BDR means Bus Device Reset. This error message can occur with a SCSI ATN+/- line cut. So it points to a hardware problem.

Commands that initiate I/O (eg. format, cp, mv, ls, dd, etc.) should return with I/O errors.

Potential sources of hardware problems are:

  • HBA interface
  • SCSI cable
  • SCSI device interface or disk

In this case the SCSI cable between the host and the Sun StorEdge 3310 was defective. To resolve this, replace the aforementioned SCSI cable.
