Symptoms
A T3 array running FW older than 3.1.2 and having NTP enabled will
occasionally clear the warranty date of the battery.

This may case a premature replacement of the batteries. If this happens, you will see messages
similar to the following in the array syslog:

   Jun 27 16:21:41 t3b1 BTSD[1]: N: u2pcu1: Warranty date was cleared.

Once this has happened, the command refresh -s may return: "Shelf Life
Expired".

Resolution
The problem is described in bug ID 4948319 and is resolved in FW 3.1.2.

The solution is to upgrade the FW using patch ID 115179-11 or 115180-05 as appropriate. At the time this article was created, the current FW was 3.1.4. but the fix for this particular problem was released on 3.1.2.

It is possible to restore the warranty dates. This information can be found in a T3 Extractor taken prior to the event. Find the output of the ".id read" command in the extractor file. If the warranty date is not known, you can estimate it based on the time the battery was installed. If you are using 3.x FW (older than 3.1.2) then you will need to place a service call with SUN and reference this article in order to restore the warranty date.

In the following, the normal substitutions for date and time are done. The X and Y in uXpcuY identify the PCU which reported that the warranty date had been cleared.

   .id write bwdate uXpcuY YYYYMMddhhmmss
.id read uXpcuY

The second command will output and 8 digit sequence which is used in place
of WWWWYYYY in the next command:

   .id write bweek uXpcuY WWWWYYYY

Warning: The use of commands that start with "." is not officially

supported, but they are occasionally required anyway. Ultimately, these

functions will be migrated to the supported command set. In this case, the

commands are not needed once 3.1.2 is installed.

Also, with Firmware 3.x array, the "." commands are password protected.

You need to issue the command "sun" and give the password "arrayservice".

If this procedure is required at the customer site, then engage a local Sun

resource to perform the operation because this information cannot be given

to the customer.
