Symptoms

After clicking the finish button in Upgrade Array Firmware wizard as a final confirmation, the progress bar appears, then the following status is displayed and upgrade fails:

Error upgrading firmware. Check the following error message and array alarm page for possible problems.
- Could not make connection to the controller. One of the controllers is not reachable.
Check network and password.

Cause

The causes can be:
  • Network issue
  • Array password issue

Solution

Please perform the following steps to correct this issue.
  1. Validate controller communication for both controllers from the CAM system:
    • Refer <Document 1008327.1> Validating Sun StorageTek[TM] 2500, 6000, and Flexline Array Controller Out of Band Communication.
    • Refer <Document 1021058.1> Validating Sun StorageTek[TM] 2500 and 6000 Array Controller In Band Proxy Agent Communication.

      • If BOTH Controllers can communicate over port 2463 out of band, and the error persists, continue to Step 2.
      • If BOTH Controllers can be communicated in-band via the proxy agent, and the error persists, continue to Step 2.
      • If BOTH Controllers cannot be communicated with via in-band or out of band, resolve this issue using one of the documents above, prior to proceeding.

  2. Contact Oracle Support with the following information:

    • Array Type: Refer <Document 1021066.1> Verify Sun Storage[TM] Array Array Type via the User Interface.
    • Communication Method: In-Band or Out of Band.
    • Array Name.
    • Host Support Data:  Refer <Document 1021091.1> Collecting Sun StorageTek[TM] Common Array Manager Host Support Data ( aka supportData).

Additional Information

Something as simple as the wrong netmask on one of the controllers can cause this problem. In a dual controller system. If you have access to only one controller, check the netmask for the controller that cannot be communicated with. Be sure that the netmask is not set to 255.255.255.255, which is the internal network on the array, and no packets will be sent out of the array.
